Land Use and Habitat / Microclimate Surveys
Some groups like to study the land use of the countryside around Cliffe House or perhaps compare the wildlife value and microclimates of different habitats. Both of these activities could involve using several instruments for taking different types of measurements.
The group below are using a clinometer to measure the steepness of the land and the boy to the right is measuring the air temperature using an electronic thermometer.

Different habitats have a different value to wildlife. The one on the left below is very dark and only has one sort of tree with few plants beneath. The one on the right is a mixture of light and shade, has several different types of tree and many different plants growing beneath the trees. Which one do you think is the best for wildlife?

The boys below are looking at a small stream to try and find out if any plants or animal life can be found. If you are viewing this with a friend perhaps you could chat about what you think they may have discovered.
